That experience is flow state: a condition of complete absorption in an activity, where attention locks fully onto the task, self-consciousness fades, time distorts, and performance and enjoyment both rise together. The term comes from psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who spent decades interviewing artists, athletes, surgeons, and chess players and found they all described the same experience in nearly the same words — being carried along, as if by a current. And here is the short answer to how you get there: flow arrives reliably when a task is clearly defined, gives you immediate feedback, and stretches your skills just slightly beyond their comfortable edge — and when you protect the attention needed to meet it without interruption.
